What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, dance, music and acrobatics. In capoeira classes students develop physically, emotionally, and mentally as they train Capoeira's challenging movements, learn to play traditional instruments, sing music in Portuguese, and apply their training in an exciting improvised "game" that helps students develop their personal strength, response time, creativity, courage, and self-expression.
Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian plantations who weren't allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. The result was a "game" of fluid ground movements, spinning kicks, and daring acrobatics set to the energetic clapping and singing of spectators. Capoeira has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and live music.
What is Capoeira?
The best way to answer this question is to try a class and experience capoeira for yourself!
What are the benefits I will receive from capoeira training?
You’ll be amazed how training capoeira will positively affect almost every area of your life. Whether your goal is to lose weight, develop flexibility, endurance, or strength, you’ll find the help you need in capoeira class. Capoeira students find they build confidence, learn to step outside of their comfort zone, develop leadership skills, and form lasting relationships. And let’s face it: this stuff is cool.
Can anybody train capoeira?
There’s a lot to learn in capoeira! It’s like taking a martial arts class, a dance class, a gymnastics class, and a music class all at once. Every new student can expect to be good as some parts of class and be challenged by others. At Brazilian Capoeira we have classes for children as young as 4 through Adults of any age. We believe everyone can benefit from capoeira as they refine their strengths and have the opportunity to improve their weaknesses. Previous experience in dance or martial arts is not required.
What are classes like?
Classes will consist of an energetic warm-up, strength and flexibility training and technical instruction. Students will train movements individually and in set sequences with partners. Capoeira classes are fast-paced and students can expect to get a great aerobic and strength building workout – but the movements are so much fun that you probably won’t notice how hard you’re working! Some class time each week will be devoted to learning to play the traditional instruments used in capoeira and to singing songs in Portuguese. One of the most exciting things about training capoeira is that students get to apply the things they are learning on a regular basis by playing the “game” of capoeira in the “roda.”
What if I want more?
New students don’t immediately qualify for all of the training options available at Brazilian Capoeira. After a short introductory period of training, many students choose to apply for the Leadership training program and discover how much more they can get out of training capoeira. Capoeira is and always has been a tool for creating effective members of society. This leadership training program provides students with a focused curriculum that helps them refine and apply the benefits of capoeira training to their personal, professional, and family life.
Can I really do this?
Yes. One of the most inspiring things we see at Brazilian Capoeira is our students accomplishing things they never knew were possible. Our curriculum is structured and our instructors are trained to maximize the effectiveness of your personal training. We’ve seen this happen in our own lives, we’re excited to help you do it too!
