Chapter 4 - Position, Location, and Movement Vocabulary

Now that you've learned some basic body parts, it's time to learn how an instructor might tell you to use those body parts in a capoeira class. Vocabulary for thits chapter begins with some words that describe direction and position.

para frente to the front / forward
para trás to the back/backwards
em frente in front
de costa (from) behind

Here's a list of verbs that are commonly used with the vocabulary we've learned so far. These verbs are in what is called the "infinitive form." This means they are not conjugated.  The infinitive form in English has the word "to" in front of it.

abaixar to lower
levantar to raise
esticar to straighten, to extend
dobrar to bend, to fold
pisar to step
defender to defend
atacar to attack
chutar to kick
esquivar to dodge
proteger to protect
abrir to open
fechar to close
colocar to put
dar to give
ficar to stay, to remain
derrubar to knock over
sair to leave
entrar to enter
